This initiative aims to enhance the nation's energy security, stimulate economic growth, and position Ghana as a regional energy hub in West Africa. (Ghana News Agency, The Business & Financial Times)

Project Overview

The Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) has entered into a $700 million agreement with a consortium comprising Integrated Logistics Bureau Limited, Jonmoore International, Phoenix Park Limited, and the African Finance Corporation to construct GPP Train 2 at Atuabo in the Western Region. The plant is designed with an initial capacity of 150 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd), expandable to 300 MMscfd, and is expected to be completed within 24 months .(Ghana News Agency)

GPP Train 2 will process raw natural gas from the Jubilee and TEN fields, separating it into valuable components such as propane, butane, pentane, and stabilized condensates. The lean gas, primarily methane and ethane, will be integrated into the existing pipeline infrastructure for distribution .(Ghana News Agency)

Natural Gas Reserves and Current Utilization

Ghana's offshore fields hold substantial natural gas reserves:

  • Jubilee Field: Approximately 746 billion cubic feet (Bcf) of gas .(ResearchGate)

  • TEN Field: Around 353 Bcf of gas .(ResearchGate)

  • Sankofa Gye Nyame (SGN) Field: Estimated at 1.13 trillion standard cubic feet (Tscf) of non-associated gas .(Energy for Growth Hub)

Despite these reserves, a significant portion of produced gas has been underutilized. In 2021, only about 38.6% of the 256,262 MMscf of raw gas produced was exported for processing, with the remainder re-injected or flared due to limited processing capacity .(Investment Times)

Long-Term Benefits

1. Enhanced Energy Security: The additional processing capacity will reduce reliance on imported fuels, stabilize energy costs, and ensure a more reliable power supply, supporting Ghana's industrialization efforts .(The Business & Financial Times)

2. Economic Growth and Job Creation: The project is expected to create 1,500 direct and indirect jobs, stimulating local economies and providing employment opportunities in construction, operations, and maintenance .(MyJoyOnline)

3. Regional Energy Export Potential: With rising natural gas demand in neighboring countries like Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and Burkina Faso, Ghana can position itself as a key gas supplier in the region, leveraging existing infrastructure like the West African Gas Pipeline .(The Business & Financial Times)

4. Industrial Diversification: Processed natural gas can serve as feedstock for various industries, including fertilizer production and petrochemicals, fostering industrial diversification and reducing dependency on imports .(The Business & Financial Times)

Government Support and Strategic Importance

The Ghanaian government has demonstrated strong support for the project, with Cabinet approval emphasizing its role in addressing energy shortfalls and enhancing gas supply . Energy Minister John Jinapor highlighted the plant's contribution to the country's energy transition and industrialization agenda.(MyJoyOnline, Citi Newsroom)

The construction of GPP Train 2 represents a strategic investment in Ghana's energy infrastructure, promising to unlock the full potential of its natural gas reserves. By enhancing energy security, fostering economic growth, and positioning Ghana as a regional energy hub, the project aligns with the nation's long-term development goals.(Ghana News Agency, The Business & Financial Times)
