SPRINGFIELD BREAKS GROUND: GHANA’S AFINA WELL SET FOR RECORD-BREAKING DEEPWATER APPRAISAL
The Springfield Group, an indigenous upstream petroleum company, has announced the arrival of the Deep-sea Bollstra rig to begin appraisal activities on the Afinex-1x well located in the company’s West Cape Three Points offshore block.

Kevin Okyere
(CEO, Springfield Group)
The announcement was made by CEO Kevin Okyere during a press conference held in Accra. He stated that the Afina well is projected to contribute approximately 50,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd) to Ghana’s production capacity.
This appraisal program initiation follows a ruling by the international court of arbitration on July 8th, 2024, which granted Springfield approval to complete the unitization of the Afina and Sankofa fields. The tribunal recommended that this action be undertaken within a six-month timeframe.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Okyere highlighted that the appraisal program, set to begin shortly, is expected to be completed in a record time of approximately 35 days.
“I am pleased, distinguished media members, to announce that the Mobile Offshore Drilling Unit, the Deepsea Bollstra, has arrived in Ghana and commenced the re-entry and Drill Stem Test of Afina 1-x in line with the Appraisal Programme.”
He added that
“the programme is scheduled for approximately a month and will enable us to flow test the Afina reservoir and obtain well productivity data.”
He also took the opportunity to address remarks made by Ben Boakye, Executive Director of the African Centre for Energy Policy, regarding the completion of the appraisal and the submission of contradictory reports. Mr. Okyere refuted these comments, describing them as false.
The Afina well extends approximately 70,000 kilometers offshore and reaches depths of around 4,000 kilometers. A successful campaign would establish Springfield as the first independent African producer to operate in deep waters.
According to Mr. Okyere, the process is costing Springfield approximately $70 million. The company, in collaboration with its partners—the GNPC, GNPC Explorco, and international contractors like Northern Ocean Limited and Halliburton—is set to carry out the operation.
