GHANA'S FIRST OIL EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION COMPANY: SPRINGFIELD E&P

It is very rare to come across a local company that has the technical expertise and financial capacity to explore and produce hydrocarbons, especially in a developing country like Ghana, a country that began commercial oil production just in 2011.

In the exploration and production space of oil and gas, some names like ENI, Kosmos, Aker, Tullow and the likes are very common to hear. Until about 2016, a new age of local participation in the exploration and production of oil and gas began with a company called Springfield Exploration and Production (SEP).

Kevin Okyere
(CEO, Springfield Group)

Springfield began in 2008 as a local company in the fuel trading space. During that time, efforts were made by the company to secure an oil block for exploration and production. The government denied their proposal owing to the fact that they were not yet financially capable to take up the task. In view of that, foreign companies who had the technical expertise and financial capability were able to secure oil blocks and start production.

Springfield E&P, headed by CEO Kevin Okyere did not give up on securing an oil block and kept knocking on the doors of the government after building the necessary capacity needed for the task at hand, exploration and production of oil and gas.

Finally, the company was allocated a block in the deep waters of Cape 3 Points. At the time, that was the farthest oil field given to any company. A challenge was thrown. The company did not give up, rather worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality. After several seismic and appraisal works, oil was struck in 2016 and production began. This great feat made Springfield E&P the first Ghanaian oil E&P and also the first company to drill and produce oil at the deepest part of the ocean (as at the time they began production). Almost a decade from then, Springfield has made significant progress in oil production in Ghana and is making plans to expand its production to other oil blocks still within the Cape 3 Points basin.
