636 ILLEGAL REFINERIES UNCOVERED IN NIGERIA

Over the past five months, the military has discovered and dismantled 636 illegal refining sites, seizing 21.7 million liters of crude oil worth N54 billion.

These statistics were compiled from military press releases detailing operations against oil theft from August 3 to December 1.

Following a directive from President Bola Tinubu in June to curb oil theft and boost national revenue, there has been an intensified military campaign, notably in the South-South region.

The PUNCH's data analysis revealed that over a span of five months, at least 610 individuals suspected of oil theft were apprehended. 

Additionally, the military seized a total of 670 boats involved in transporting stolen crude oil and its derivatives. 

As per the military's report on August 3, they dismantled 36 illegal refining sites, captured 310,700 liters of stolen crude oil, and detained seven individuals suspected of oil theft, along with impounding 32 wooden boats.

On August 11, 39 illegal refining sites were discovered; 1,247,700 litres of stolen crude oil valued at N60,734,675 were recovered and 17 suspected oil thieves were arrested.

On August 25, military actions resulted in the apprehension of 22 individuals suspected of oil theft, seizing 682,400 liters of pilfered crude oil worth N414,396,250.

By August 31, the military had dismantled 34 operational illegal refining sites, confiscated 569,400 liters of stolen crude oil valued at N765,863,000, and apprehended 16 suspects alongside 36 boats.

On September 7, the military intercepted 191 alleged oil thieves, recovering 6,652,250 liters of stolen crude oil with an estimated value of N4 billion.

On September 14, the military found 89 unauthorized refining sites, seized 1,205,950 liters of pilfered crude oil valued at N1,011,851,250, and apprehended 45 individuals.

Moreover, in operations conducted on September 22, soldiers retrieved 496,250 liters of stolen crude oil worth N946,387,570.00, detaining seven suspects along with 16 boats.

On September 28, military personnel in the Niger Delta region uncovered 34 illegal refining sites, recovered 696,250 liters of stolen crude oil valued at N388,469,650.00, and arrested 22 suspects along with 21 boats.

On October 26, the military uncovered 53 illegal refining sites, recovered 983,350 litres of stolen crude oil valued at N968m and arrested 19 suspects with 66 boats.

On November 17, military forces found 49 illicit refining locations, seized 151,850 liters of pilfered crude oil valued at N128 million, and apprehended 49 individuals suspected of oil theft.

On November 23, the troops eradicated 50 unauthorized refining sites, confiscated 578,900 liters of crude oil worth N1 billion, and detained 49 suspects along with 31 boats.

Additionally, on December 1, the military destroyed 51 illegal refining sites, recovered 267,700 liters of crude oil estimated at N668 million, and arrested 58 oil thieves along with 25 boats.

Oladele Fajana, a security expert, advised the military not to become complacent, emphasizing that the actions of oil thieves have significantly harmed the country's economy.

 “Their arrests and recoveries are quite impressive. They must do more because the activities of oil thieves are inimical to the nation’s economy,” he said.
